Medication: the basics

Medication is one option for ADHD in UK guidance, alongside support and adjustments. Decisions are made with a specialist — this lesson is general information only.

NICE guidance says medication can be offered to adults with ADHD whose symptoms are still causing significant impairment after environmental changes.

Medicines are started and reviewed by a specialist, with regular checks such as blood pressure and weight.

Medication doesn't change who you are, and it isn't right for everyone. Many people combine it with practical strategies.

Never start, stop or change medication without speaking to your prescriber.
